Introduction

The ETX-LX (Embedded Technology eXtended) is a highly integrated and fast PC module with extreme low power consumption. It is the RoHS alternative for ETX-mgx and more. It allows, due to the used AMD LX800 processor, the usage of the board without active cooling in applications, where space ETX-LX SATA Headers limitations (the maximum height without heat sink is only 10 mm!) are major requirements. Despite the very little board dimensions, the EXT-LX offers all standard interfaces such as sound, Ethernet, USB2.0, graphic and TVout. The AC97 compatible sound chip is supported by most operating systems. For networking purposes the ETX-LX comes with a 10/100 MBit Ethernet controller.

You´re looking for a secure and EMI tolerant boot medium and want to be unlimited in your media capacity choice? A CompactFlash™ socket is already mounted on the ETX-LX and offers you a lot of possibilities. For further expansions two IDE ports with Ultra66 DMA capabilities are available. They do not provide the PCI bus only, the ISA bus signals are also available. A lot of existing ISA boards can still be used via an ISA slot on a baseboard. This avoids expensive redesigns and well proven ISA cards to PCI versions for standard PC motherboards. Despite the unbelievable variety of functionality, the EXT-LX is a very inexpensive choice, the cost effectiveness of this device is unbeatable. It also takes advantage of the new ETX 3.0 specication that allow for 2 Serial ATA ports without violating the existing ETX 2.8 pin usage (see picture on right)

ETX modules are like components, plugging in to an application-specific baseboard. The ETX modules supply the core CPU and memory subsystems together with sound, SVGA, Ethernet and standard PC I/O. They connect to the rest of the embedded system through high-density, low profile, surface-mount connectors, which carry both ISA and PCI bus signals as well as dedicated I/O interfaces. The mechanics of the interconnection is such that an ETX/ baseboard combination is virtually the same as height a one-board solution. ETX modules are scaleable and interchangeable, and they make possible the rapid development of semi-custom solutions for embedded applications .... always a Jump ahead!

Heatspreader Concept

ETX heatspreader The heat-spreader is a 2mm thick aluminium plate. It provides a thermal interface surface for heat removal from the ETX module. The heat-spreader is thermally coupled to the CPU die or package surface, and it may also be coupled to other heat generating devices on the module (e.g. chipset, vga chip). The heat spreader is not intended as a heat sink, although it may be suitable for this purpose on low power modules operating under benign conditions. Higher power modules or higher temperature conditions will probably require heat removal devices (e.g. heat sink with fan, heat pipe, larger heatsink etc.) to be attached to the heatspreader, or it may need to be thermally coupled to a chassis.

Kontron have two different heatspreaders for the ETX-LX. One with threaded post and one with through hole posts. Drawings of the assemblies are available on request
