Introduction

Diamond Point has introduced a range of EPIC computer modules from Kontron, which are characterised by the same pin-out and interface for PC/104 and PC/104plus standards, and a host of I/O. This family feature allows re-use of the chassis and maximises redesign utilisation.

Full PC/104 compliant I/O expansion capacity with motherboard style front side feature access is provided, allowing the CPU board itself, underneath the added I/O, to be delivered with almost all front plate accessible functionality, thus avoiding additional cable and cable handling costs. The built-in compatibility of these modules allows easy upgrade within the EPIC product family.

The EPIC/PM family member from Diamond Point hosts an Intel® Pentium® M or Celeron® M processor offering clock speeds from 600MHz up to 1.8GHz, bundled with the widest choice of proven PC I/O, including Compact Flash, dual 10/100BaseT Ethernet, UMDA-133 EIDE hard disk, floppy disk, 6 x USB2, 4 x COM, 8 x GPIO, 5.1 sound, LPT printer and keyboard/mouse interfaces. A memory socket capable of accommodating up to 2GB DDR RAM allows the use of standard notebook memory. A high speed dual Intel Extreme Graphics 2 engine, which is included in the chipset, integrates DVO, CRT and LCD interfaces and performs with up to 2 x 32MB UMA memory.

The EPIC/CE family member is a version which hosts an Intel ULV Celeron processor capable of clock speeds of 400, 733 or 1000MHz, again bundled with a host of PC I/O, including dual 10/100BaseT Ethernet, UMDA-133 EIDE hard disk, floppy disk, 6 x USB2, 4 x COM, 25 x GPIO, 5.1 sound, SPP/EPP/ECP printer and keyboard/mouse interfaces.

A DIMM socket to accommodate up to 512MB SDRAM allows the use of standard notebook memory. The integral Intel high speed graphics engine performs with up to 4 to 32MB UMA (shared on BIOS).

Display integration for all family members is simplified via JILI, Kontron's Intelligent LVDS Interface, which automatically recognizes which type of display is connected and independently sets all video parameters. All modules incorporate a watchdog timer, real time clock and power fail detect facilities.

EPIC modules from Diamond Point support the widest range of operating systems, encompassing Windows® XP, XP embedded, NT, NT embedded, 2000, CE, 98 and 95, and Linux, QNX 6.1, VxWorks and DOS.

Measuring just 115 mm x 165 mm, all EPIC modules are available in two versions, one with an ATX PSU (Power Supply Unit), the other with an AT PSU. They have an onboard back-up battery and are plug-and-work enabled to further reduce time-to-market.

All modules are lead free in compliance with RoHS directives.
