Introduction

Diamond Point International's recently introduced Lassen® iQ module from Trimble, adds powerful, 12-channel simultaneous operation GPS functionality to mobile products in a postage-stamp-sized footprint. The module provides complete position, velocity and time solutions in the host application.

Designed for portable handheld, battery-powered applications such as cell phones, pagers, PDAs and digital cameras, the module is also ideally suited for use in standard GPS applications such as tracking. It is fully compatible with Diamond Point's popular Lassen SQ module.

The Lassen iQ module features dual GPS signal sensitivity modes; standard and enhanced. With enhanced mode enabled, the module automatically switches to higher sensitivity when satellite signals are weak. The module also supports TSIP download of critical startup information for fast acquisition. This aided GPS (A-GPS) startup provides hot start performance for each power-up.

Capable of operating from 3.0VDC to 3.6VDC power supplies, the Lassen iQ has an ultra-low power consumption of just 26 mA @ 3.3 V.

It supports the four most popular protocols, DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) according to RTCM (Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services), TSIP (Trimble Standard Interface Protocol), TAIP (Trimble ASCII Interface Protocol) and NMEA 0183.

Enclosed in a robust metal shield giving the utmost protection and ease of handling, the compact module incorporates solder mounting tabs and measures just 26 mm wide x 26 mm long x 6 mm high (1.02" x 1.02" x 0.24"). It weighs a mere 6.5 grams (0.2 ounces) including shield.

The module offers an MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) figure of 60 years, making it one of the most reliable GPS receivers on the market.

Compatible with active, 3.3VDC antennas, the module provides both open and short circuit detection and protection for all antennas. An ultra-compact embedded antenna, a compact unpackaged antenna and a compact magnetic-mount antenna with MCX or SMA interconnections to suit particular applications are all available from Diamond Point.

A starter kit to ease the design process is also available from Diamond Point. The kit comprises the module mounted on an interface motherboard in a durable metal enclosure, AC/DC power converter, magnetic-mount antenna, embedded antenna, serial interface cable, cigarette lighter adapter, and TSIP, TAIP and NMEA protocols, together with a software toolkit and a manual on CDROM.
