Introduction

Quatech PCI to PCMCIA card drives allow desktop PCs to access the technology used in laptop, notebook and handheld computers. This enables easy data sharing between portable and desktop systems via memory cards or hard disk cards, as well as sharing of portable peripheral devices such as wireless modems, serial port cards and parallel port cards.

PCI Internal drive units can accommodate Type I, II or III PCMCIA devices including memory cards, ATA hard disk cards, modems, and a variety of other PCMCIA I/O devices. In addition the front drive unit can accept one Type III card and one Type I or II card at the same time. This advantage means that both an I/O card such as a modem, and an ATA hard disk card can be used at the same time in the same drive bay. The models install in a single PCI or universal (low profile) slot and are accessed from the rear of the computer.

* The CardBus specification defines: "The maximum trace lengths for all interface signals are limited to 1.5 inches (38.1mm)" between the CardBus controller and the socket. Due to this, is not possible to use CardBus cards in adaptors with front drive bays.

Cardbus cards can be identified by an extra earthing strip (usually gold) near the PCMCIA card (extra shielding for the faster transfer rates).

Cardbus card
Cardbus (32bit)
Non cardbus card
Non-cardbus (16bit)
ROHS Status:

PCD-B/PCI-ST is lead free/ROHS compliant.
PCD-B/UPCI-E is lead free/ROHS compliant.

Important: These products will not work in machines with more than one CPU core.
In a multi-processor PC, Windows NT & 2000 uses the IOAPIC to assign interrupts from the PCI bus, based on information provided by the BIOS. CardBus adapters are usually enumerated by the BIOS as PCI to CardBus bridges and as such most BIOS's consider them as not requiring an IRQ. During the initial boot process, Windows stores this IRQ routing information, and it is not re-configurable, so when the driver loads, this decision not to assign an IRQ to the CardBus adapter has been set in stone. For correct operation, the PSeries and PCMCIA drivers require an IRQ to be assigned for card status change etc. In the Uni-processor kernel, IRQ's are not routed through the IOAPIC, so if the BIOS has not assigned an IRQ, the PSeries driver is able to route an IRQ through to the hardware without any problems.

Regretably, the PCD2-F/PCI-E & B-PCD2-F/PCI-E are no longer available (these products are not ROHS compliant).

Quatech cards come in a retail box with manual/driver CD and cable (where necessary)
