Aitech A171 - A171 Rugged Compact PC with MIL-C-38999 Connectors

Aitech's A171 Rugged Compact PC (RCP) is a small, low power, high performance Core™ i7 based rugged computer.

With the latest Core i7 processor from Intel a wide variety of I/O interfaces, small form factor, low power dissipation, and very rugged design, this computer can be used for any application that requires a high performance reliable PC.

This RCP consists of a rugged environmentally sealed aluminum enclosure housing all the necessary electronics, connectors and power supplies. The enclosure's footprint dimensions are 260mm x 180mm, its height is 45.2 mm, and it weighs less than 2.5 kg. Typical power consumption is less than 40 Watts.

The system comprises an Aitech COTS C802 Core i7 CompactPCI SBC coupled with an I/O and power interface board, both of which are hard mounted to the inside of the system front panel. This design results in an extremely rugged computer, and enables the front panel to be serve as a heatsink for high efficiency cooling of the system's high power components.

Two military circular MIL-C-38999 Series III front panel connectors are used to interface the PC to the external equipment. A 5-pin input power connector is used to connect standard, MIL-STD-704D compliant 28Vdc power to the PC through a line filter that protects the internal electronic components from spikes that could harm the system. A larger connector is used for connecting all the PC I/O signals. For highest reliability in harsh environments, the connectors are soldered directly to the system PC board.

The RCP is based on Intel's Calpella (Arrandale + ECC) platform, dual-core processor and four threads (Intel Hyper-Threading® Technology) with large integrated on-chip L1, L2 caches and shared L3 cache with a companion QM57 PCH I/O controller hub.

The processor’s integrated 2D/3D graphics controller supports graphics and video processing and provides CRT and DVI output channels.

The RCP integrates large memory arrays to support processor and user application needs. Memory resources include up to 4 GB of fast DDR3 SDRAM with ECC protection and up to 64 GB of SATA SSD (based on NAND Flash media) for user/application-specific parameter storage.

In addition to its high-performance processor architecture, the RCP provides lots of I/O, including two Gigabit Ethernet ports, two Fast Ethernet ports, two USB 2.0 ports, four UART serial ports, eight discrete I/O lines, a stereo High Definition Audio Interface (output or input), plus DVI and VGA (CRT) outputs. For future functionality expansion, the RCP design includes an option for two opto-isolated CANbus 2.0B interfaces. These interfaces will be implemented only if and when this function will be requested.

The RCP is housed in a rugged compact Faraday cage chassis that has been designed for survivability and full functionality under the extreme conditions of temperature, shock, vibration, acceleration, altitude, and humidity that are to be expected in military airborne and ground applications. The design ensures maximum reliability even when the unit is mounted near aircraft engines or other high vibration locations. Superior EMI/RFI performance is assured by the Faraday cage design of the chassis and on-board filtering of I/O signals.
